St. Vitus - Martyr
Born - c.290 in Sicily
Died - c.303 in Lucania

Statue created - c.1702-1703
On 13 January 1702 he undertook to execute the statue, and delivered it on 14 March 1703.

Sculptor - Girolamo Gramignoli
He received 60 scudi for the statue and 20 for the dog.

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
Depicted as a child, he bends to pat a dog, his traditional attribute.

Artistic work in stucco of the highest quality was rare at the end of the seventeenth century   This work is characterized by a semingly open and waving movement.

The Roman Martyrology 2004 simply lists St Vitus as a martyr of Lucania at an unknown date. A legend has him repeatedly arrested and tortured during the fourth century, along with his tutor Modestus (75) and his nurse Crescenzia. He is a patron of epileptics.
